Exciting Advances in Skin Cancer Prevention: The Role of Laser Treatments

A recent study published in Dermatologic Surgery has unveiled some promising developments in the fight against a common type of skin cancer known as keratinocyte carcinoma (KC). Researchers have been exploring the potential of nonablative fractional lasers (NAFL) to reduce the risk of developing this prevalent skin cancer. Historically, options for preventing KC have been limited, but this study offers a beacon of hope.

Conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital, the study focused on patients with a history of facial KC. It compared two groups: 43 patients who underwent NAFL treatment and 52 who did not. The findings were remarkable. Only about 21% of those treated with the laser developed new facial KC, compared to 40% of those who didn't receive the treatment. This suggests that NAFL treatment could potentially halve the risk of developing new facial KC.

Moreover, the study found that those who did not receive the laser treatment developed new facial KC more rapidly than those who did. Even after accounting for factors such as age, gender, and skin type, the untreated group was still more likely to develop new facial KC.

In our practice, we offer a similar cutting-edge treatment using the hybrid ablative/non-ablative Sciton Halo Laser. Our skilled Certified Registered Nurses, Lyzza and Arianna, perform this treatment to address aged, sun-damaged skin and acne scarring. This aligns with the study's findings, highlighting the dual benefits of laser treatments: enhancing skin appearance and potentially preventing common skin cancers.

This study underscores the exciting possibilities in dermatology, paving the way for further research and future applications. As we continue to explore these innovative treatments, we remain committed to offering our patients the best in skin care and cancer prevention. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving field!
