Mohs Micrographic Surgery: Certified Precision Treatment for Skin Cancer
Jennifer Baron, MD, Dermatology & Mohs Surgery
At our practice, we specialize in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a highly effective and precise technique for treating skin cancer. This advanced surgical method is renowned for its high cure rates and tissue-sparing capabilities, making it the gold standard for treating certain types of skin cancer.
Not every doctor is certified in Mohs, according to the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) and the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS) in fact, there are fewer than 600 surgeons who are active, credentialed, and ABD board-certified who have also completed an ACMS-recognized in Mohs (Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery) in all of North America as of May 31, 2025. Dr. Baron is one of those few. Why is this important? Read on!
What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a specialized procedure used to treat basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and certain types of melanoma as well as other, more rare skin cancers such as Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans. Developed by Dr. Frederic Mohs, this technique involves the systematic removal and examination of cancerous tissue layer by layer. This meticulous process ensures complete cancer removal while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
Benefits of Mohs Surgery:
- High Cure Rates: Mohs Surgery offers the highest cure rates for skin cancer, often exceeding 99% for primary basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas.
- Tissue Conservation: By precisely targeting cancerous cells, Mohs Surgery minimizes the removal of healthy tissue, preserving the surrounding skin and reducing scarring.
- Immediate Results: The procedure includes immediate microscopic examination of the excised tissue, allowing for the confirmation of cancer removal during the surgery.
- Outpatient Procedure: Mohs Surgery is typically performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia, ensuring patient comfort and convenience.
The Mohs Surgery Process:
- Excision: The visible tumor is surgically removed along with a very thin layer of surrounding tissue.
- Microscopic Examination: The excised tissue is processed and examined by Dr. Baron under a microscope where she checks for cancerous cells.
- Sequential Removal: If cancer cells are detected, additional layers are removed and examined until no further cancerous cells are found.
- Reconstruction: Once the cancer is completely removed, Dr. Baron carefully plans and reconstructs the surgical site to optimize cosmetic outcomes.
Who is a Candidate for Mohs Surgery?
Mohs Surgery is particularly beneficial for skin cancers located in cosmetically sensitive areas, such as the face, ears, scalp and neck, as well as complex functional areas such as hands, feet, shins, genital and peri-anal areas where preserving healthy tissue is crucial. It is also ideal for recurrent, aggressive or rare skin cancers or those with visually indistinct borders.
At our practice, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of care and expertise in skin cancer treatment. With Mohs Micrographic Surgery, we offer our patients the best possible outcomes, combining precision, safety, and aesthetic consideration.
